HPHS Students Excel at UIL State Academic Meet
Congratulations to the HPHS UIL Science Team for winning the 4A Science State Championship in Austin on May 2 for the third consecutive year!
Team members are Tianen Li (tied for silver medal as 2nd highest individual); Megan Tang (tied for silver medal as 2nd highest individual); Chao Wang (5th high individual); and Sushen Patel (15th highest individual).
The HPHS Science Team also won the 4A Science State Championship in 2006 and 2007. Coach of the Science Team is Mr. Wenzen Chuang.
The HPHS Mathematics Team placed 4th at the UIL State Academic Meet. Team members are Tianen Li, Megan Tang, Joo Yeon (Joie) Ham, and Xin (Paul) Wei (highest score for the HPHS Math Team). The HPHS Math Team is coached by Dr. Charles Tillerson.
The HPHS Social Studies Team also placed 4th at the UIL State Academic Meet on Friday, May 2. Team members are Adriana Teran (silver medal as the 2nd highest individual), Meg Showalter, Audrey Bartosh, and Maddie McEntire. This team is coached by Mrs. Cynthia Jones.
James Skidmore placed 4th in the Headline contest at the 4A UIL State Journalism contest. This is James's third consecutive competition at the state level. James is coached by Mr. Kent Smith.
We are extremely proud of these fine scholars and their teachers/coaches for this exceptional performance at the State UIL Meet.

HPHS In Lead For UIL Lone Star Cup
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has released the update for the 2007-2008 Texas Dodge Dealers Lone Star CupTM. Honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, the annual Texas Dodge Dealers Lone Star CupTM is open to all Texas UIL participant high schools.
One school in each of the five UIL classifications (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A) will claim the coveted Cup. High schools accumulated points based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification will receive the Lone Star CupTM trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the Texas Dodge Dealers.

Standings include: State and Area Marching Band, Team Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving, Boys and Girls Wrestling, Boys and Girls Basketball and Boys and Girls Soccer.

HPHS Celebrates National Teacher Appreciation Week
HPHS joins in the celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4 - 10, 2008. The HPISD Board of Trustees issued the following proclamation to mark this special week:
Whereas, teachers are actively committed to the craft of helping students develop their ideas, knowledge, and dreams; and
Whereas, HPISD teachers fill many roles as listeners, explorers, role models, motivators, and mentors; and
Whereas, HPISD teachers create rich, rigorous, and relevant classroom activities to prepare their students to achieve at the highest levels; and
Whereas, HPISD teachers are a community of life-long learners who are committed to professional growth; and
Whereas, HPISD teachers are positive role models for their students, exhibiting ethical leadership, good citizenship, and positive energy in their classrooms every day; and
Whereas, teachers continue to influence students long after their school days are over;
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Highland Park Independent School District Board of Trustees proclaims May 4 - 10, 2008, as Teacher Appreciation Week in Highland Park Schools.

Three Band Students Tapped for Tournament of Roses Parade
The HPHS Highlander Band is very proud to announce that 3 members have been selected to participate in the 2009 Bands of America Honor Band for the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. Student candidates submitted an application and a performance CD of their playing abilities to be considered for this very prestigious ensemble.
Julia Hosch (French Horn), Michael Nation (French Horn), and Jacquelin Hipes (Piccolo) have all been chosen for the Bands of America Honor Band, which is made up of student musicians from across the United States and is by audition only. The Honor Band will march on national television at the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade.

Academic Teams Advance to UIL State
Competition
The HPHS UIL science, mathematics, and social studies teams won their regional competitions April 12 and advance to the state meet in early May. Also advancing is James Skidmore, who finished second in Headline Writing.
Individual honors include Tianen Liu, who finished first in mathematics and science and posted the top score in both biology and chemistry. Adriana Teran took first in social studies, and Chao Wang, Megan Tan, and Sushen Patel finished second, third, and fourth respectively in science.
Congratulations to all and good luck to those scholars bound for UIL state!

THE BAGPIPE Wins State and Local Awards
The HPHS student newspaper, The Bagpipe, received the Award of Distinguished Merit, the highest award from the Interscholastic League Press Conference, a state UIL newspaper competition. Elizabeth Ygartua took first and third place in student art, and Adam Snider toook first place in general news photo. Both Ygartua and Snider were Tops in Texas nominees.
Yguartua also won first place in news design and cartoon/illustrations in the Dallas Morning News Journalism Day competition. Virginia Hawkins and Claire Jordan were named finalists in sports feature, and Claire Klimko was a finalist in hard news reporting.
Congratulations to these fine students, other Bagpipe staffers, and adviser Kent Smith.

2008-2009 Literary Festival To Feature U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins
The keynote speaker fo rthe 2008-2009 Highland Park Literary Festival will be Billy Collins, United States Poet Laureate 2001-2003. Collins is a Distinguished Professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York. He has published eight collections of poetry and his next, entitled "Ballistics," will be published later in 2008.
The festival, scheduled for February, 2009, began in 1995 as a collaboration between interested parents and the HPHS English Department. For more than a dozen years, HPHS students have enjoyed meeting, working with, and learning from distinguished authors, including George Plimpton, Doug Wright, Michael Chabon, Kaye Gibbons, Tim O'Brien, Russell Banks, Anchee Min, and Scott Simon.

Five Scots Named in Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition
Congratulations to Mariya Grygorenko, Trey Carlock, Arden Tubbs, J.J. Hipes, and Madeline Shaw, who have been named National Semifinalists in the 2007-2008 Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition.
Over 550 reserach entries were submitted by students from across the country. Each report was evaluated and selected in a blind reading by epidemiologists from universities and health organizations, such as the Center for Disease Control. Semifinalists are among the top 120 students who submitted their research to this compeition and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The YES competition is a scholarship program designed to expose high school students to the critical field of epidemiology and has awarded more than $2 million in college scholarships over the past five years.
Congratulations to thes five fine scholars for addressing important health issues that are afflicting the human population today.

HPHS Named U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School!
Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings has announced that Highland Park High School has been named a Blue Ribbon School for 2007 by the U. S. Department of Education.
The Blue Ribbon School award is the most prestigious honor that can be bestowed on any school -- public or private -- in the United States. Previously named a Blue Ribbon School in 1988, HPHS has been awarded this distinction in 2007 for sustained high achievement.
HPHS is one of only 2 high schools in Texas and one of only 40 high schools across the country were named Blue Ribbon School award winners for 2007.
Representatives from HPHS will travel to Washington, D.C., for the Blue Ribbon School awards ceremonies.
Congratulations to all current HPHS students, alumni, current and former teachers and staff members, and to the Park Cities for this outstanding honor.
