AP Testing May 5 - 16

by Patrick Cates
May 4, 2008

The next two weeks will be among the most important of the entire school year as our students focus on Advanced Placement exams.   Over 1,000 Scots will sit for over 3,200 exams from May 5 through May16, making our AP program one of the largest in the country.   As you know, AP courses are college-level courses taught by specially trained members of our faculty that provide students with rich, rigorous, relevant, and engaging curricula that will prepare them well for any college or university.   Students who score a 3, 4, or 5 on their AP exams may also qualify them for college credit.

The policy of the Board of Trustees of the Highland Park Independent School District requires that all students who have enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP exams.   Academic penalties for students who fail to take an AP exam are severe.   The HPHS school website calendar lists all AP exams each day for the next two weeks.

The percentage of students in our school who participate in the AP program, the number of exams, and/or the scores on these exams figures prominently in national and state recognition and accountability programs; for example,  based on our school's high participation rate, HPHS has been consistently listed in the Newsweek magazine's list of the Best High Schools in America,"  named an Honor Roll School by U.S. News and World Report, and achieved an Exemplary rating by the Texas Education Agency among other honors.   However, these school-wide honors are secondary to the preparation and possible advanced placement credit that each HPHS student receives for college courses while enrolled in AP courses in high school.

Good luck to all AP students who will be taking an AP exam in the next two weeks.   And congratulations to AP teachers and students for making the HPHS AP program one of the largest and finest anywhere!
